Independent dual-beam control based on programmable coding metasurface

Programmable metasurfaces incorporating with tunable materials or components are emerging as an attractive option to realize reconfigurable manipulations of electromagnetic (EM) behaviors in real-time. Many efforts have been devoted the realization active EM metasurface and significant progress has achieved, showing their unprecedented ability arbitrarily manipulate wavefronts dynamic functions. However, most existing multi-beam based on passive building blocks, only possessing one a few functions, which cannot provide independent control, thus limiting further uses wireless communications. Hence, 1-bit coding high-efficiency, programmable, control is proposed this paper, providing responses real-time reconfigurability, controlled by external digital circuits through direct current (DC) bias networks. Specifically, meta-atom loaded PIN diodes employed achieve independently phase characteristics, complex functions can be manipulated redistributing spatial phases metasurface. Symmetric/asymmetric dual- analyzed theoretically simulated software. Then experimental verification, consisting 14 × meta-atoms fabricated tested standard microwave anechoic chamber, measured results accord well simulations. The promising generate arbitrary multi-beams, may largely enhance information capacity metasurfaces, offering untapped potentials communication systems.
